Pitt County Release Records Explained
A release is the end of one custody event, not always the end of a case or all legal control. At Pitt County Detention Center, a person may leave after posting bond, satisfying a court order, serving a local term, receiving credit for time served, or having a charge dismissed when no other hold exists. The departure may also be a transfer to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, another jail, a hospital, the U.S. Marshals Service, or immigration custody. Those outcomes call for different records.
The official Pitt County Detainee Search is for current detainees only and refreshes hourly. When a name vanishes, the only safe conclusion is that the current-list query no longer shows that person. It does not state why. PCDC, a matching court record, NC SAVAN/VINELink, or the receiving custodian must supply the release or transfer event. A release from physical confinement can also be followed by probation, parole, or post-release supervision.
A missing name is not a release code. Confirm the recorded event before describing a person as released to the community.
Note: Record the time of every live roster check because an hourly update can change what the next visitor sees.
How Pitt County Custody Ends
The exit type determines which official source should be checked next. Pitt does not publish a public codebook that promises every release label used in its jail system, so plain categories are more accurate than invented codes.
| Recorded event | What it means | Next source |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or court conditions | Pretrial custody ends after the stated conditions are met. | PCDC release field and Pitt court case |
| Time served or sentence expiration | The local confinement term ends. | PCDC record and judgment |
| Probationary judgment | Confinement may end while court-ordered supervision begins. | Court file and NCDAC supervision record |
| NCDAC transfer | The person leaves the county jail but stays in state custody. | NCDAC Offender Public Information |
| Federal or ICE transfer | Another custodian may take control. | BOP, ICE, federal court, or USMS record |
| Hospital or other transfer | Departure is not proof of community release. | PCDC and the named receiving agency |
A court order gives legal authority, but it may precede the moment when jail staff finish checks, property return, and physical departure. For that reason, the order and the jail event should be read together.
Fields in Pitt County Release Records
A focused request asks for existing fields tied to one custody spell. Identity should be supported with more than a name, such as a booking number, birth date, or case number. This reduces false matches and helps the custodian locate the right record without being asked to create a new report.
| Field | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Full name and identifier | The person and the matching booking or offender file |
| Admission or booking date | The start of the custody spell |
| Release date and time | When this custodian recorded the exit |
| Release type or authority | Bond, court order, term completion, or another recorded basis |
| Destination or receiving agency | Whether the event was a transfer instead of community release |
| Case or docket number | The link to the court action |
| Booking photograph | A separate image record, subject to classification and limits |
A North Carolina prison record uses other fields. The NCDAC detail may show Actual Release Date, Projected Release Date, Last Movement and its date, sentence history, and separate incarceration and supervision statuses. For a completed state term, the actual date plus status and movement is stronger than an old projected date.
Note: Multiple sentence lines can carry different dates, so reconcile the full history instead of copying one field in isolation.
Request Pitt County Release Records
The Pitt County Sheriff or PCDC custodian is the first recipient for a local jail record. Written comments about the detainee application may be sent to Pitt County Detention Center, 124 New Hope Road, Greenville, NC 27834. Operational questions go to Inmate Information at 252-902-2868 during regular hours, or 252-902-2913 after hours and on holidays. Confirm the right records recipient before sending private identity data.
- Identify the person with a full name and a known booking number, case number, or suitable birth detail.
- Give an approximate booking and release date range, then request the existing admission, release date and time, release authority, and receiving-agency fields.
- Ask for electronic copies in their existing form. If a field is exempt, ask the office to redact it and provide the public portion.
- Request an estimate before any actual-cost copy fee or extensive-request service charge is incurred.
- If access is denied, ask for the legal basis in writing. Use the Pitt Clerk for a judgment, dismissal, bond order, or docket entry.
G.S. 132-6 and 132-6.2 require access at reasonable times and copies as promptly as possible, but North Carolina sets no universal fixed-day deadline for an ordinary Chapter 132 request. An agency need not create a record that does not exist.
Pitt Release Law and Retention
Chapter 132 broadly covers photographs and electronic materials created or received in public business. Its reach has limits. G.S. 132-1.4 excludes criminal investigation and intelligence records from the general public-record definition, while still making listed arrest-event facts public. A jail administrative release sheet can be treated differently from an investigative file. A narrow request for discrete release fields, with an offer to accept redaction, respects that line.
Pitt gives no verified promise that a released record stays on the public detainee search for one day, three days, or any set period. The application defines its scope as people currently detained. NCDAC says ordinary offender information generally reaches back to 1972, although its dedicated release interface displayed only three current calendar-year choices when researched. That observed menu is not a legal retention rule.
Record access can also change after a correction, sealing order, or expunction. The source office should be asked to resolve a disputed field because a copied screen cannot update the underlying database. A precise correction request identifies the URL or screen, booking or offender number, disputed item, observation date, and a supporting court or custodian document. For a court display that remains visible after an expunction order, the North Carolina Judicial Branch directs the person to the clerk. NCDAC questions should cite the offender number and the exact sentence or movement line. When VINELink appears wrong, first determine whether the status came from the participating jail or NCDAC feed. Each system controls only its part of the record chain.
- Discharge
- The end of the applicable custody or supervision obligation.
- Time served
- Credit that satisfies the confinement ordered in a case.
- Expunction
- A court process that removes qualifying records from ordinary public access.
- Detainer
- A request or notice that another agency may assume custody.
Posting Bond in Pitt County
Pitt publishes an official How to Post Bond sheet with cash, property, and surety routes. A cash bond calls for the amount set by the judge. A property bond uses qualifying real property and requires court or Clerk steps. A surety bond uses a licensed bondsman. Current instructions should control because procedure and required documents can change.
Meeting a bond condition permits pretrial release. It does not dismiss the charge, prove guilt, or fix the exact time a person will leave PCDC. Another hold may still prevent departure. Compare the bond order with the PCDC release event, then follow the Pitt court case for later disposition.
Note: Use the current Pitt bond sheet because required documents and court procedures may change after an older copy was saved.
Pitt Release and Expunction Timing
Physical release and expunction are separate events. Under North Carolina law, a waiting period for some convictions can run from the later of conviction or completion of incarceration, probation, or post-release supervision. Leaving jail may therefore be only one date in the calculation. The North Carolina Judicial Branch expunction resource explains the court process, while the Clerk holds the case file.
Once an expunction applies, the public court display and other official sources may change. That later absence does not rewrite what an old private copy once showed. A person seeking a correction should identify the exact record and use the originating office's process.
Find Pitt County Released Inmates
The best search starts with the custodian, not a broad name result. One person may move from PCDC to a state prison, federal custody, or supervision. Each source confirms only its part of that chain.
- Check the official Pitt detainee list, marked current detainees only. Save a booking and case number if the matching record is still visible.
- If the person is absent, call PCDC and ask whether the recorded event was release, transfer, or another departure. Check NC SAVAN for a matching custody event.
- Search the North Carolina court Portal by Pitt case. A bond, dismissal, or judgment explains authority, but not necessarily the jail's processing time.
- For a state prison term, use the NCDAC Inmate Releases search and ordinary OPI detail. Read incarceration and supervision status separately.
- For federal or immigration custody, use BOP or ICE. If no public result resolves the event, request the existing record from the correct custodian.
The Pitt County 24-Hour Release List explains the same-day fallback when no official county feed exists. A name and at least one added identifier should match before any record is treated as belonging to the person sought.
NCDAC Pitt Release Search
No adult state prison was identified inside Pitt County. Still, the NCDAC Inmate Releases search is vital because a person can leave a prison elsewhere and be recorded as released to Pitt. Search by county, year, and month, or by surname. Pitt is release-county code 74. The resulting release county is a recorded destination, not necessarily the prison or conviction county.
Open the detailed profile rather than stopping at the monthly row. Sentence history can contain several commitments, projected dates, and actual dates. Match the offender number, birth data, offense, county, and chronology. An inactive incarceration status paired with an actual release date supports departure from prison. Active probation, parole, or post-release status means community supervision still continues. Even two inactive state fields do not rule out a new county, federal, or immigration custody event that lies outside NCDAC.
| Search or result field | Use |
|---|---|
| County, year, month | Find state-prison releases recorded to Pitt in a monthly window |
| Surname and Sounds Like | Find a named person when spelling may vary |
| Offender number | Match the result to the seven-digit state identity |
| Release date and type | Identify the reported state exit event |
| Actual and projected dates | Separate a completed event from an estimate |
| Two status fields | Separate incarceration from probation, parole, or PRS |
Ordinary OPI does not include county-jail-only records. Someone who bonded out of PCDC and never entered state prison may be absent even though the local release was real.
Note: “Release County” is the destination NCDAC recorded, not proof that the prison or conviction was located in Pitt County.
Pitt Court Release Record Fallback
The North Carolina court Portal can reveal a Pitt disposition, judgment, bond action, or probation order. It is legal context. The court date may not be the time PCDC finished release processing, and a bond order does not prove another hold was cleared.
When an online summary is incomplete, the public terminal and paper file at the Pitt Clerk remain the sound fallback under G.S. 7A-109. Ask for the judgment, dismissal, bond order, or docket entry by case number. A suspended sentence means an active term was held back subject to conditions; probation means court-ordered community supervision. Neither should be described as unconditional discharge.
The official North Carolina court Portal is the online starting point for a Pitt County case.
The captured portal page identifies the court channel, while the live docket or clerk file supplies the current case details needed to interpret a release.
Pitt Release Alerts and Transfers
NC SAVAN/VINELink covers participating county jail and state prison data. Choose North Carolina, search a person by name or ID, verify the reporting agency, and review the event date. Phone, email, text, TTY, or app channels may be offered. A notice is useful corroboration, not a certified order, and it cannot show that no other custodian took control.
Federal routes are distinct. The BOP Locator can show a past federal release date and a RELEASED status. ICE's Online Detainee Locator covers current detainees and certain people released from ICE within a limited window. A Pitt jail departure under an ICE detainer or USMS writ is normally a transfer until the receiving system confirms a later community release.
| Source | What it covers | What absence means |
|---|---|---|
| Pitt roster | Current PCDC detainees | Only that the current query has no match |
| PCDC release record | Local jail exit | Request by booking and date |
| NCDAC OPI | State prison and supervision | Not proof about a local-only stay |
| BOP Locator | Federal custody history | Check court or older archives as needed |
| ICE ODLS | ICE custody and limited recent releases | Lag and exclusions may apply |
Note: Keep each jurisdiction's event and date separate when the same person moves through local, state, and federal custody.
Pitt Release Reentry Resources
The Sheriff's Detention Programs Unit works on accountability, emotional well-being, practical skills, and preparation for reentry. Pitt also has a Local Reentry Council and has hosted a Joint Reentry Council meeting at Pitt Community College. These programs can point toward local help, but participation does not prove that anyone has been released or qualifies for a service.
The NCDAC Pitt County reentry resource page is the better place to confirm current contacts. A resource listing can change. Call the listed provider and ask about current scope before relying on it.
Getting Home After Pitt Release
Pitt Area Transit is an eligibility-based, reservation-oriented service, not a walk-up PCDC release shuttle. County materials describe curb-to-curb service outside Greenville city limits and certain Pitt Community College service, generally Monday through Saturday during daytime hours. Holiday closures, night service, and Sunday gaps matter.
Call 252-902-2002 ahead of time to ask about eligibility, the service area, and scheduling. No official source promised a stop at the detention center, free transport, or universal access. Family pickup and other verified arrangements may be needed when a release occurs outside transit hours.
Pitt Medical Release Planning
Pitt's adopted 2026 jail medical plan gives unusually specific continuity rules at the custody boundary. For detainees with medical needs, the plan calls for a diagnosis summary, medication information, prescriptions or a short supply, referrals, and public-health follow-up where required. If a person is released while hospitalized, PCDC must coordinate with the hospital. During a facility transfer, records and medication accompany the detainee as law permits.
These are systemwide discharge-planning duties, not public proof that a named person left custody. Health information remains confidential. Release verification still comes from the jail event, court authority, and any receiving custodian, not from a request for medical details.
Pitt County Release Facilities
Pitt County Detention Center is the adult local jail. Pitt Regional Juvenile Detention Center is a state youth facility with confidential records and no proper adult search route. North Carolina state prisons use statewide NCDAC searches even when release is recorded to Pitt. No BOP prison or dedicated ICE center was identified inside the county, yet federal systems still matter when PCDC transfers custody.
